Founding of the École hôtelière de Lausanne
Shortly before the turn of the 20th century, tourism was booming, and Switzerland was a popular travel destination. However, there was a shortage of professional hotel staff, so a vocational school was needed. The visionary hotelier Jacques Tschumi, CEO of the Lausanne Beau Rivage Palace, therefore founded the EHL Hospitality Business School in 1893—the world’s first hotel management school. Tschumi was an influential member of the Swiss Hotel Association and, together with two other association members, developed the guiding principles of the Tschumifonds, which originated from a bequest. Not least, he is the namesake of today’s Tschumi Foundation.
